Our diligent community of students, faculty, and alumni are regularly sharing their work with the world and collecting awards and accolades along the way. Below we celebrate the Tisch community’s vibrant selection of projects, recognitions, and highlights from the 2024 fall semester. 

Institute of Performing Arts

Art & Public Policy

Camonghne Felix ‘16 (MA, Arts Politics) had the poem “At the door of integration, I turned around” published in The Nation.

Kathy Engel (Professor, Art & Public Policy) had lines from the poem “Life Support” from the 2007 collection, We Begin Here: Poems for Palestine and Lebanon included in the exhibition, "Jenny Holzer: Light Line," on view at the Guggenheim Museum.

Pato Hebert (Department Chair and Professor, Art & Public Policy) presented at the “Caring Futures: Contradictions, Transformation, and Revolutionary Possibilities” conference in Paris, France. 

Nina Riley ‘23 (MA, Arts Politics) performed her original play Aftermath: Analyzing Anguish as part of the Black Femme Freedom Fest: A viBeCollab Joint. 

Hanna Tudor ‘23 (MA, Arts Politics) and Ana Anu ‘23 (MA, Arts Politics) hosted their second show Entangled Futures on Governors Island through their residency with Climate Imaginarium.

Kathy Engel (Professor, Art & Public Policy) released a new poetry collection entitled Dear Inheritors at the Lower East Side Girls Club.

Pato Hebert (Department Chair and Professor, Art & Public Policy) was an Artist in Residence at Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts & Agriculture in Sisters, Oregon. 

Sōlena Ornelas ‘24 (MA, Art and Public Policy) traveled to Venice, Italy to conduct research at the “Black Portraitures: Shifting Paradigms” conference as a recipient of the CRS Research Travel Grant Initiative. 

Alexander Cavaluzzo ‘12 (MA, Art & Public Policy) was named the 1st Writing Fellow at Velvetpark Media.

Collaborative Arts/Open Arts

Jason Snell (Instructor, Collaborative Arts) led a series of 25 workshops with attendees at “Sound Scene", an annual Audio Arts Festival that takes place at the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC.

Jeffrey Stanley (Instructor, Open Arts) worked with two colleagues to launch "The Jeff & Shuvam Show", a YouTube podcast in which rock photographer Shuvam Dasgupta and Stanley review new Indian cinema streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Carrie Henley (current student, Collaborative Arts) performed original songs in a cabaret-style show at the Open Doors Festival at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage.

Steven Drukman (Associate Arts Professor, Collaborative Arts) premiered his new play titled Pru Payne at SpeakEasy Stage.

Jason Snell ‘23 (Instructor, Collaborative Arts) partnered with The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Education Department to create an immersive experience in “Mandalas: Mapping the Buddhist Art of Tibet.”

Katherine Helen Fisher (Visiting Assistant Professor, Collaborative Arts) and Alan Winslow (Assistant Director of Technical Operation, Collaborative Arts), alongside Kate Ladenheim (Assistant Professor, UCLA) received a 2024 Google Artist + Machine Intelligence Faculty Research Award supporting "Lamentation: Dancing the Archive”, to create an immersive installation reimagining Martha Graham's iconic 1930 work, "Lamentation."

Richard Move (Faculty, Dance) presented “Devrai (Sacred Grove)” at Prelude in the Parks – Performances for the Planet.

André M. Zachery (Assistant Arts Professor, Dance) had his multimedia choreographic work "Digital Middle Passage" screened as a part of "Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures" at the New Museum of African American History & Culture - Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.

Allen Fogelsanger (Assistant Arts Professor, Dance) and Kristen Foote ‘19 (MFA, Dance) published a detailed analysis of José Limón's dance Chaconne in Bach: Journal of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, in a special issue on "Choreographing Bach's Famous Chaconne." 

Pamela Pietro (Chair of the Dance Department) performed a new solo at the Mini Festival produced by Apricot Productions in Berlin, Germany. 

Karla Puno Garcia '08 (BFA, Dance) was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.

Giada Matteini (Assistant Arts Professor, Dance) was announced as part of Tisch Creative Research's Mega Grants Incubator 2024-2025 cohort. 

cari ann shim sham* (Professor, Dance) presented an AI project entitled “fungitari” at Infinite Wall in Austin, Texas. 

Angie Pittman (Assistant Arts Professor, Dance) was announced as a Faculty Fellow for NYU’s Center for Humanities.

Andy Teirstein (Professor, Dance) presented the film, "El Niño Mudo" with support from the Tisch School of the Arts Dean's Fund and Xin Ying (MFA candidate, Dance) who choreographed and performed in the short film.

Netta Yerushalmy (Adjunct Instructor, Dance) premiered performances of MOVEMENT at NYU Skirball.

André M. Zachery (Assistant Arts Professor, Dance) launched a workshop series in collaboration with 651ARTS entitled "Against Gravity - Community Fly-Zone Workshops."

André M. Zachery (Assistant Arts Professor, Dance) presented "Echo Making," a new multimedia installation at the York College Arts Gallery.

Xin Ying ‘25 (Principal, Martha Graham Dance Company, MFA candidate, Dance), received a 2024 Google Artist + Machine Intelligence Faculty Research Award supporting "Lamentation: Dancing the Archive”, to create an immersive installation reimagining Martha Graham's iconic 1930 work,"Lamentation." 

Andy Teirstein (Professor, Dance) contributed a chapter to the new edition of "Art and Social Interaction: Finding Freedom, Purpose and Joy in Creativity" about teaching music classes in prisons.

Paul Tazewell '89 (MFA, Design for Stage & Film) spoke with the New York Times about his process of creating the costumes for the motion picture: Wicked.

Allen Lee Hughes '79 (MFA & Professor, Design for Stage & Film) received the 2024 LIT Lighting Design Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mikey Rose (Cycle 30) and Clare Fuyuko Bierman (Cycle 30) presented SUNFACE at Ars Nova's ANT FEST. 

JongYoon Choi (Cycle 13) presented the new musical Marie Curie at London's Charing Cross Theatre.

Durra Leung (Cycle 29) presented Lullabies for Motherf*ckers Vol. 1 at the New York Theatre Barn's New Works Series.

Sean Patrick Flahaven (Cycle 7 and Faculty) won a 2024 Tony Award. 

George C. Wolfe (Cycle 1) was honored with the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 77th Annual Tony Awards. 

Paulo K Tiról (Cycle 24) released the East West Players World Premiere Cast Recording of “On This Side of the World” on digital platforms.

Ernie Bird (Cycle 29) was chosen to join the 2024 Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project at Curb College, Belmont College in Nashville.

Troy Defour (Cycle 31) shared Chosen Families: A Musical Theatre Concert at Pridefest at The Tank with musical arrangements by David Lancelle (Cycle 26).  

Hannah Z. Morley (Cycle 33) presented her new play Sisterhood at The Tank directed by M.L. Redstone (Cycle 33) and featured Ryan O'Dea, Trevor K. Band, and Sarah Rossman (all Cycle 33) in the cast. 

Brent Black (Cycle 17) gave a talk on “Adapting the Moving Image” at the Museum of the Moving Image. 

Deborah Brevoort (Cycle 6 and Adjunct Faculty) premiered Blue Moon Over Memphis at the Okuma Auditorium in Tokyo, Japan and at the Kongo Noh Theatre in Kyoto, Japan. 

Joel Waggoner (Cycle 19) presented his one-man show Alone & Alive at the Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Seth Christenfeld (Cycle 23) curated NEO at The Green Room 42 which featured work from program alums TJ Rubin (Cycle 25), Justin D. Cook, and Danielle Koenig (Cycle 31).

Emily Rose Simons (Cycle 25) presented songs from her musical Becoming Nigella at the Other Palace in London, UK. 

Maggie Moe and Joshua Vranas (both Cycle 30) presented a concert of their thesis musical My Pet Dragon at Joe's Pub.

Danielle Koenig and Abbie Goldberg (both Cycle 31) produced Feisty Disabled Artists Cabaret at Joe's Pub which also featured songs by program alums Justin D. Cook, Mason McDowell, Miranda Holliday (all Cycle 31), and Avi Amon (Cycle 22). 

Veronica Mansour and abs wilson (both Cycle 32) presented their musical Lighthouse as selectees for NAMT's 36th Annual Festival of New Musicals.

Chase O'Neill and Theo Teris (both Cycle 27) premiered their musical Here There Be Dragons at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Sam Norman (Cycle 30) presented Come Dine With Me: The Musical at three UK venues.

Andi Lee Carter and Briana Harris (both Cycle 28) hosted Verse Intro Cabaret at Soho Playhouse which featured Cheeyang Ng and Eric Sorrels (both Cycle 28), and AriDy Nox and Kyle Segar (both Cycle 27). 

Dahlak Brathwaite (Cycle 30) won a 2024 Princess Grace Award.

Deiz Demirkurt (Cycle 29), Ella Sodam Yoon (Cycle 31) presented their new musical Echo at The Center at West Park's Evolution Festival featuring Vaheed Talebian (Cycle 33). 

Eloise Govedare (Cycle 24) and Aleksandra Weil (Cycle 24) presented their musical A Rebel Prayer at New York Theatre Barn's Choreography Lab. 

Katya Stanislavskaya (Cycle 17) presented a collection of her original musical theatre songs at Berklee College.

Royce Vavrek (Cycle 16) presented his new opera The Listeners at Opera Philadelphia.

Melina Nakos (Cycle 35) presented their new play Snow Bird at Brooklyn Art Haus.

Rachel J. Peters (Cycle 14) presented her immersive opera, Welcome to the Madness at the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. 

Cheeyang Ng (Cycle 28), Eric Sorrels (Cycle 28) and Eric Fegan (Cycle 28) gathered at Joe's Pub to present a collection of original songs written and performed by the three alums. 

Andi Lee Carter (Cycle 28), Briana Harris (Cycle 28), and Ziyan Yang (Cycle 32) hosted and were featured at the “Verse Intro Cabaret” at Soho Playhouse.

Will Aronson (Cycle 16) presented the musical Maybe Happy Ending on Broadway at the Belasco Theater.

Dan Messé (Cycle 5) premiered his new musical Prelude to a Kiss at the Milwaukee Rep in co-production with South Coast Repertory. 

Marcus Scott (Cycle 22) won the Chesley/Bumbalo Award for Playwriting.

Deborah Brevoort (Cycle 6 and Adjunct Faculty) was approved by the Fulbright Scholarship Board for a residency at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.
