Evan Cabnet '00 (BFA, Drama) was announced as the new Artistic Director for Second Stage Theater beginning in September 2024. Cabnet's first official programming will launch in fall 2025.
Cabnet is taking over for founder, current Artistic Director, and fellow alumna Carole Rothman '72 (MFA, Directing), who founded Second Stage Theater in 1979. Rothman announced last year that she would step down as Artistic Direcot after 45 years of service, ending her tenure in August of 2024.
Under Rothman's direction, the Second Stage Theater produced more than 250 plays and musicals, including Next to Normal, Eurydice, the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Dear Evan Hansen, and more. The theater has won countless awards, including the 2024 Tony Award for Best Play Revival for Appropriate by alumnus Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins '07 (MA, Performance Studies).
A highly respected theater director, Cabnet has served as the Artistic Director of Lincoln Center Theater’s LCT3 since 2016.
