Assistant Arts Professor, André M. Zachery, is honored to have his multimedia choreographic work "Digital Middle Passage" screening part of "Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures" at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. Exhibit opened in March 2023 and runs until August 18, 2024.
This choreographic work created by André in 2015 is a solo about recoding identity during a time of literal and speculative transition. Time and space in regards to Black existence is suspended between two realms: one familiar and the other foreign. The solo remixes the horror of the Middle Passage into a new journey of "self-recoding" through struggle and capture yet ultimately embodying power and agency.
