Assistant Arts Professor, André M. Zachery, is honored to have his multimedia choreographic work "Digital Middle Passage" screening part of "Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures" at the New Museum of African American History & Culture - Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. Exhibit opened in March 2023 and runs until August 18, 2024.
This choreographic work created by André in 2015 is a solo about recoding identity during a time of literal and speculative transition. Time and space in regards to Black existence is suspended between two realms: one familiar and the other foreign. The solo remixes the horror of the Middle Passage into a new journey of "self-recoding" through struggle and capture yet ultimately embodying power and agency.
