PS alum Sandra Ruiz (M.A. and Ph.D.)
PS alum, Sandra Ruiz (M.A. & Ph.D), has just published a book entitled Left Turns in Brown Study. In this book, Ruiz offers a poetic-theoretical inquiry into study and mourning. Drawing on Black, Brown, and queer activism and theory, Ruiz interweaves poetry, memoir, and lyrical essay to offer “brown study” as key for understanding Brownness along spectrums of loss, and more emancipatory ways for living together.Inviting readers to turn left into anticolonial ways of writing, reading, and listening, Ruiz engages with spectral presences, from illiterate ancestors to those lost to unnatural disaster, and victims of colonial violence. Study is shared movement and Brownness lives in citation. Conceptual and unconventional, this book is crucial for those who theorize minoritarian literary aesthetics and live the ongoing and deliberate pangs of colonial and imperial logics.
