Highlights: Spring 2025

Each semester at Tisch abounds with dynamic new work and uncommon achievements from our community. As we close the curtains on the 2025 Spring Semester, we revisit the students, faculty, and alumni whose impactful work touched our worlds or earned special recognition this year.

Institute of Performing Arts

Art & Public Policy

Luis Rincon Alba (Assistant Professor, Art & Public Policy), Shamar Watt (MFA Candidate, Dance) were named inaugural grantees for the Tisch Creative Research Collaborative Impact Grant.

Shanté Paradigm Smalls (Associate Professor, Art & Public Policy) received the Global Research Initiative Fellowship to further their research on Black Francophone speculation and sci fi in France. 

Marjuan Canady ‘10 (MA, Art & Public Policy) co-produced the musical “Hell’s Kitchen" which won the Recording Academy/Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album.

Pato Hebert (Department Chair and Professor, Art & Public Policy) appeared in Please Hold, an experimental documentary.

Karen Finley (Professor, Art & Public Policy) had two poems entitled “Grief” and “Cooking” featured in The Brooklyn Rail. 

Collaborative Arts

Sirintip Phasuk (Instructor, Collaborative Arts) presented MYCELIUM at the Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center.

Fina Strazza '27 (Collaborative Arts) starred in John Proctor is the Villain on Broadway.

Fina Strazza '27 (Collaborative Arts) was nominated for a 2025 Tony Award.

Sam Charney (Collaborative Arts) premiered a solo performance art piece, "Transduction," at the Denver Fringe Festival.

Sophie Boyce (Cycle 32) and Veronica Mansour (Cycle 32) won a Richard Rodgers Award for The Dark Lady.

Mel Marvin (Faculty) released the album LIVES OF THE ARTISTS.

Tidtaya Sinutoke (Cycle 22), Rona Siddiqui (Cycle 21), Pete Mills (Cycle 8), and Jesse Kearney (Cycle 8) were declared finalists in the National Music Theatre Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center.

Lisette Flodowski (Cycle 28) and Richard C. Walter (Cycle 28) presented their musical Madame Cliquot at Pittsburgh CLO. 

Scott Davenport Richards (Cycle 6) had music presented at the New York premiere of BLIND INJUSTICE at the Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall.

Gaby Alter (Cycle 15) presented the musical NOBODY LOVES YOU at ACT San Francisco. 

Ben Bonnema (Cycle 21) presented the musical THE APPLE BOYS for which he wrote the music and lyrics at Bucks County Playhouse.

Performance Studies

André Lepecki (Professor, Performance Studies) gave a talk entitled: "Performing in Surveilled Totality" at Lafayette Anticipations in Paris. 

Mark Lockwood ‘17 (MA, Performance Studies) has successfully defended his dissertation, "BLACK INCHES: MASCULINITY, VISUALITY, AND PERFORMANCE IN THE 'BLATINO PORN' ERA," and started the SPAN Postdoctoral Fellowship at Northwestern University.

Diana Taylor (Professor, Performance Studies) was awarded a year-long Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Humanities to finish her digital book, Shape Shifting Performance.

Hadar Landan ‘20 (BA, Performance Studies) presented the first evening length show, “LanDance: "54.”

Ann Pellegrini (Professor, Performance Studies) and Dr. Avgi Saketopoulou (Faculty, NYU’s Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis) had their book, Gender Without Identity nominated for a 2024 Gradiva Award. 

Gwen Rakotovao '19 (MA, Performance Studies) started pursuing a PhD at Stockholm University of the Arts with their research, titled "Famadihana 2.0 | Embodied Explorations: Investigating the Essence of the Famadihana Ritual." 

Zjana Muraro ‘15 (MA, Performance Studies) presented experimental dance work at the White Wave Dance Festival.

Karen Shimakawa (Professor, Performance Studies), Allen Weiss (Professor, Performance Studies), André Lepecki (Professor, Performance Studies), Marc Arthur ‘19 (PhD, Performance Studies), and Joshua Takano Chambers Leston '09 (PhD, Performance Studies) spoke and presented work at Park Avenue Armory's symposium "A Dream You Dream Together."

André Lepecki (Professor, Performance Studies) had his book, Exhausting Dance: Performance and the Politics of Movement translated into Romanian with a total of 14 translations since its release.

Christina Yang (PhD Advisor, Performance Studies) was selected as a Curatorial Ambassador for the inaugural Arrival Art Fair.

Alex Tatarsky ‘19 (MA, Performance Studies) received the second annual Triple Canopy Fellowship. 

Penelope Gould '23 (BA, Performance Studies) presented the DIY punk show/musical Lost Grrrl Found at Pianos.

Aliza Shvarts '10 & ‘20 (MA & PhD, Performance Studies) had her work, Untitled [Senior Thesis] (2008), named #32 of the best 100 artworks of the 21st century by ARTnews / Art in America. 

Tara Aisha Willis ‘13 & ‘22 (MA & PhD, Performance Studies) was announced as the Curator of Dance & Theater at EMPAC, the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Aliza Shvarts '10 & ‘20 (MA & PhD, Performance Studies) was commissioned to write a feature article on the state of reproductive justice in the art world today for Art in America. 

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins ‘07 (MA, Performance Studies) was named one of TIME Magazine's Most 100 Influential People of 2025.

Xiao Liu (PhD candidate, Performance Studies) received a GSAS Predoctoral Summer Fellowship.

Fusako Innami  '08 (MA, Performance Studies) had Touching the Unreachable: Writing, Skinship, Modern Japan made available on Open Access and can be read online for free on Fulcrum platform.

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins '07 (MA, Performance Studies) won a 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Purpose.

Bobby Wooten III (Assistant Arts Professor, Recorded Music) was the bassist for Grammy-award winning singer Sabrina Carpenter.

Nate Zucker (current student, Recorded Music) participated in the MIT AI Filmmaking Hackathon of 2025 and won the Best Character award for the short film ‘For Pixi.’

JD Samson (Assistant Arts Professor, Recorded Music), Hitha Yelluru '23 (Recorded Music) were named inaugural grantees for the Tisch Creative Research Collaborative Impact Grant.

Karriem Riggins (Spring 2025 Artist in Residence) and Ashley Kahn (Professor, Recorded Music) were interviewed for the Tisch website about their course on the intersection of jazz and hip hop.

Maggie Rogers '16 (BFA, Recorded Music) was announced as the 2025 Tisch Salute speaker.

Sharang Biswas ‘15 (Adjunct Professor & MPS, ITP) is set to release his first novella, The Iron Below Remembers.

Anney Norton ‘23 (MA, IMA) and her company, Dream Tea NYC, was featured on The Food Network website's "49 Women-Founded Food Businesses We Love to Shop From." 

Jasmine Nackash ‘25 (ITP) was featured recently in Creative Applications with her project, “The Red Line”.

Amelia Winger-Bearskin ‘15 (MPS, ITP) debuted the inaugural AI art auction, Augmented Intelligence at Christie's NY. 

Khushi Hora, Carolina Herrera, and Leah Jian Yu (all current students, IMA) participated in the MIT AI Filmmaking Hackathon of 2025 and won the Best Character award for the short film ‘For Pixi.’

Omi Bahuguna, Mark Chan, Yidi Zhou, Prisha Jain, and Olivia Lee (all current ITP students) won the Best Music award for their short film ‘Qatsi’ at the MIT AI Filmmaking Hackathon of 2025.

Kate Hartman ‘07 (Adjunct Instructor & MPS, ITP) released the book; Make: Wearable Electronics, Second Edition. 

Tiri Kananuruk ‘18 (Adjunct Instructor and MPS, ITP) and Sebastián Morales ‘18 (MPS, ITP) won the bronze award for excellence in design from the A-Design Award and Competition.

Leia Chang ‘23 (MPS, ITP), Lucia Gomez (MPS, ITP), Sam Lavigne ‘18 (Fellow, ITP), Simone Salvo ‘21 (MPS, ITP), Elyana Shams ‘24 (MPS, ITP), and Carrie Sijia Wang ‘20 (Fellow, ITP) exhibited work at CultureHub ReFest in New York.

Sarah Rothberg ‘14 (Assistant Arts Professor and MPS, ITP), Lisa Jamhoury (Faculty, ITP) and Nouf Aljowaysir ‘18 (MPS, ITP) were featured in the Onassis ONX Winter Exhibition at the ONX Studio in Midtown Manhattan.
