For the past four years, John Bezark, ITP Alum, has been working as one of the core game designers for the Obvious Agency project: Space Opera. Space Opera is a multi day Theatrical role playing game that innovates and radically combines tabletop roleplaying games, democratic organizing practice, and theatrical spectacle. The experience tests a community's ability to work together in order to thwart existential consequences.
The production is opening this June in Philadelphia, at the Arch Street Meeting House. The piece consists of three 8 hour performances spread out over the entire month of June. The specific performance dates and times are:
- June 14th, 2025, 12-7pm
- June 21st, 2025, 12-7pm
- June 28th, 2025, 12-7pm
If you want to engage in the peace, there's a couple different ways to do it of increasing commitment:
- The easiest way to engage with the peace is by attending one of the sessions for a two hour time slot, as a Galactic Witness. This will allow you to watch the galactic drama unfold and to get a sense of how the piece works. The intention is that attending this will be a satisfying theatrical experience in and of itself and the price for these tickets will be roughly $15-$35, sliding scale.
- The next level of engagement would be to purchase a one episode experience. This includes one full day session of Space Opera gameplay which lasts about six hours and includes one catered meal. This ticket has a suggested price of $50-$200, sliding scale. The way the experience is designed each session is a generation of gameplay, and so attending a single session will let you play as a community trying to solve a particular generation's existential crisis over the course of an entire day.
- Finally, the most involved, you can get is by getting a three episode saga ticket. This is a full pass which, includes three catered meals and allows you to play as a community across all three generations of the grand galactic saga of Space Opera. The suggested asking price is $90-$360, sliding scale.
