ASSISTANT ARTS PROFESSOR | SONGWRITING

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts invites applications and nominations for a full-time Assistant Arts Professor position in Songwriting to begin in Fall 2025. This is a full-time, multi-year, non-tenure track appointment, renewable based on performance.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed colleague to help students pursuing an undergraduate degree in popular music entrepreneurship develop their songwriting skills. The appointed candidate will be expected to teach students courses in songwriting at all levels, from intro to advanced, across a variety of genres.

The ideal candidate must show evidence of excellence in teaching the art and craft of songwriting, both lyrics and music, across a wide range of styles of popular music. The candidate must possess a strong historical and pedagogical understanding of the craft. Previous undergraduate teaching experience in a Performing Arts or Music department on the university level, and professional experience in the field, is required. This person will also be expected to contribute to the department’s ongoing Core Curriculum development; therefore, the applicant should be a forward thinking leader who is familiar with the operations and protocols of a university setting, and possesses effective managerial and organizational skills.

Additional responsibilities include departmental, school, and university service, student academic advising and professional development mentoring, new student recruitment and recruitment events attendance, new course development, and other administrative responsibilities as designated by the Department Chair.

MUSIC INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE

  • You are currently working as a music industry professional
  • You have a track record of being entrepreneurial, either within a larger organization or by starting new ventures
  • You are fluent in how the modern music industry works on a technical level in multiple areas:

RECORDING, PUBLISHING, DISTRIBUTION, OWNERSHIP, TOURING, MONETIZATION, MARKETING, EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES, BUSINESS PLANNING, LEGAL, and more

  • You are comfortable speaking to the above points regardless of the style or genre of music
  • You have a wide-ranging network of professionals that you’d be comfortable inviting on occasion to supplement
    the perspectives and opportunities available to students

TEACHING/MENTORSHIP EXPERIENCE

  • You are passionate about helping to prepare the next generation of industry professionals for success
  • You have taught at a university before and are enthusiastic about teaching.
  • You have experience successfully managing or collaborating as part of a team
  • In some form, you have mentored younger professionals from various backgrounds and experiences

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $80,000 - $110,000. This pay range represents base pay only (for 9 months) and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
