RECYCLING POP MUSIC: IMITATION VS. ORIGINALITY FEAT. DAN CHARNAS & JEFF PERETZ (Panel)

2:00-3:00pm; Austin Convention Center Room 11AB

In music, is anything really original? We strive to answer that very question by presenting the diverse perspectives on creativity and originality, and by looking at the way ideas are reused and renewed throughout history. By exploring the nature of musical influence - cover songs, the rise of the remix, digital sampling, technological trends and fads - and innovation, we’ll not only discover liberating notions of authorship and artistry, but create from a more informed place.

NO FUTURE - 1976 AND THE BIRTH OF PUNK IN THE UK FEAT. VIVIEN GOLDMAN

3:30-4:30pm; Austin Convention Center Room 10B

Forty years ago a rag-tag gang of young, creative and pissed off people took over the stages of pubs and clubs across the nation and changed the face of British music forever. With a mixture of art school irreverence and anarchic zeal, UK punks set in motion an anti-establishment cultural bulldozer that flattened everything in its path. The explosive legacy of this small band of revolutionary pioneers, from The Sex Pistols to Siouxsie Sioux and The Slits, has had an unprecedented influence on art, politics and culture across the world. This panel brings together music-makers, participants and commentators to celebrate and re-assess this chaotic and profound moment in music history.

RE-WRITING OF HIP HOP HISTORY FEAT. KEVIN BEACHAM, LEE "Q" O'DENAT, DAN CHARNAS, BEN ORTIZ

5:00-6:00pm; Austin Convention Center Room 16AB

Since Hip Hop's inception it has largely been reported on by outside media sources, often times resulting in the reshaping or redefining of the Culture. Many people who grew up on Hip Hop Culture have become the bloggers, journalists, filmmakers and teachers of Hip Hop history. We’ll discuss what responsibilities we have, if any, as fans, artists, etc to make sure the information we put out there, or give a platforms to, is accurate, as well as healthy for the Culture.
