On Nov 30th, Clive Davis Institute faculty and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum producer/engineer, Bob Power joined Ebro Darden, host of the Hot 97 Morning Show and lead anchor of Apple Music’s Beats 1 in New York, for an intimate and in-depth discussion, interview, and live Q&A, at a brand new cultural talk series called Sound Talk Session, which took place at Interface NYC.
Bob and Ebro discussed hip hop's evolution from the early days of the Native Tongues, capturing the clarity of sampled recordings to the current landscape of recording live instruments, and self-sampling organic and original music. Bob discussed his work, engineering classic hip hop albums from A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Jungle Brothers. Bob also chatted about re-mastering the 25th Anniversary of A Tribe Called Quest’s debut album, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, which was reissued this month by Legacy Recordings/Sony Music.
Many of Bob’s current and former students were in the audience as well as a great mix of DJs, engineers, artists, managers, and creatives, including Young Guru (JAY Z), J. Period (NaS), and MICK (Kanye West). Ebro fielded fantastic questions while Bob provided audience members with great advice on how to pursue their passion, and continually strive to evolve their interests and hone their craft.
Bob captured the sound of a cultural movement with complex arrangements in music sampling, and continues to push sound boundaries. He's currently in the process of engineering De La Soul’s latest album, complete with live strings, guitars, and violins.
Ebro is an award-winning radio DJ and on-air personality as well as frequent guest and supporter of Clive Davis Institute students, most notably Future Music Moguls and Summer High School.
