Ceremony of Us Recaptured

In January 1969, two groups that Anna Halprin had been working with got together in her San Francisco studio. One group was African American performers from Studio Watts in Los Angeles, and the other was a group of white dancers whom Halprin knew in the Bay Area. This photo was taken by Susan Landor after the first day of joint workshops. The image was part of a 2017 exhibit titled “Radical Bodies: Anna Halprin, Simone Forti and Yvonne Rainer in California and New York, 1955-1972,” co-curated by Tisch Dance teacher Wendy Perron and originating at UC Santa Barbara. Her MFA1 Graduate Seminar visited the exhibit at the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts in September, 2017. Brandon Kazen-Maddox, a member of the class, had the idea for the class to replicate the photo. The current photo was taken by Tisch Dance photographer Ella Bromblin. Donald Shorter shot and edited this video.
