Social Impact Filmmaking

IFMTV-UT 1204 | 4 units | Instructor: Harry Winer

This course is an opportunity to investigate how to create content with a social impact inspired by issues or events students are impassioned to explore. The goal is to get emerging filmmakers to think deeply about things that matter to them then transfer their observations into the stories they tell. We will analyze how to tell stories which tap critical issues of our time without preaching from a soap box. Our objective is to find a way to focus on these issues by telling stories with an honest emotional hook and character development that engages the audience regardless of the genre.

Please note: This is not a production course but students will shoot and edit a 2-5 minute film demonstrating the concepts of the course on their own smartphones/laptops. Students should have access to a cellphone that can capture moving images. They must have access to editing software and be proficient in editing what they film. No hardware or software will be provided by the NYU Madrid campus.
