Regional Media Legacies Project Update!

The first phase of the Regional Media Legacies project is drawing to a close. RML Fellows Robert Anen and Claire Fox shared lessons learned and hopes for the project’s future. The program also featured presentations by MIAP graduate students sharing their experiences as interns supported by the RML project during the summer and fall 2021 semesters working with partners such as Coney Island Museum, Hallockville Museum Farm, R.C. Diocese of Brooklyn, and Queens Museum.

Digitizing Audiovisual Media: A Hands-on Workshop Presented by the Regional Media Legacies (RML) Project

Location: Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY 11713
The complexity and cost of reformatting and preserving audiovisual media can be daunting, and often results in short-term decisions that do not translate to long-term care. Participants joined the RML team for a full day hands-on workshop demonstrating basic reformatting concerns and practices for audiovisual media.
This event was organized by the RML project in partnership with the Long Island Library Resources Council (LILRC).

Regional Media Legacies Project Update!

This project update event included presentations on work accomplished for the RML project in 2020/2021 by RML Fellows Robert Anen and Claire Fox, as well as by MIAP graduate students at internships with the Queens Museum, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, and Los Herederos. We were also joined by partners from the Railroad Museum of Long Island, LTV Media Archive, and the Hallockville Museum Farm.

Regional Media Legacies Project Webinar #3
Film Inspection & Handling: Overview of the RML film inspection kit and demonstration of a basic film inspection

RML Fellow Robert Anen hosted a presentation of the portable RML film inspection kit, and demonstrated film inspection techniques. This webinar also included tips on film care for collections to ensure a better, longer shelf life.

Conversation with a Conservator: Knowing your collections and preparing for digitization

RML Fellow Claire Fox hosted a conversation with media conservator Bill Seery at the Standby Program Media Preservation Lab located in Glen Head, NY. They took participants through the process of assessing materials prior to digitization or transfer and what questions to consider when deciding which vendor or conservator to work with.

Regional Media Legacies Project Pilot Webinar: Audiovisual Archiving Basics

Our first project webinar led by Moving Image Archiving and Preservation graduate student and RML Summer 2020 intern Aparna Subramanian. This webinar included an overview of audiovisual archiving, basic care and handling of a/v formats and a brief foray into digital preservation.
