How to Apply

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Design Department will host all interviews for admission virtually. We are sorry we cannot welcome you to visit in-person at this time, but we look forward to meeting you, seeing your work, and introducing you to our program.

  • Applicants from all disciplines of undergraduate study, not just those who have specialized in theatre and/or film design, are equally welcomed.
  • Prior experience in theatre or film production is preferred but not required.
  • An interview and portfolio review are required for admission.
  • Admission is limited to full-time graduate students beginning in September only.

Step 1 - Apply

Our application deadline is January 16th, 2021.

A graduate candidate in design must submit the application provided by the Tisch Office of Graduate Admissions, stating the particular field of interest. Final decisions of acceptance depend on completing both departmental portfolio requirements and New York University admissions requirements.

Step 2 - Set and Production Design Applicants

Submit Preliminary Samples of Your Work: Please send five samples of your set and/or production design work. Within these samples, you must include 1) at least one photo of a physical three dimensional scale model (with figures) you designed and built for one scene of a script, and 2) a drawing sample. All submissions should be in .JPEG or .PDF format and one collated Google Drive folder is preferred. Be sure to include titles or brief descriptions to identify your work.

Please email this material to

You will be contacted regarding an interview after we have received your samples. Do not send your full portfolio until directed.

Set 2 - Costume and Lighting Design Applicants

No preliminary samples required. Upon receipt of your application, we will contact you to schedule your interview. Feel free to submit your portfolio to us at any time (Step 3).

Step 3 - Portfolio and Interview

For fall 2021 admissions, all interviews will be conducted by Design Department faculty remotely via Zoom. We will contact you to schedule an interview and you will be able to choose your preferred date from options that will be provided.

We must receive your portfolio at least 7 days in advance of your interview. For information on how to submit your portfolio, please review our interview and portfolio requirements

If you have questions regarding the submission of your portfolio materials, feel free to email Michael Doshier at
