Jeremy Nelson with SADC

Jeremy Nelson with SADC

Faculty Choreographer, Jeremy Nelson, will be creating a new work on our Second Avenue Dance Company for the March Concert.

“I really want to highlight the dancers. You want to make sure everybody has the context to show who they are, because you know they’re all stars, all 19 of them. And that definitely shapes how I go about the process. It's not just about my choreography, it's more importantly about the students, or a marriage of the two things..."

“I’ve had the experience of working with large numbers, and I don’t want to repeat myself. There are certain devices used to manage large groups of people. So a challenge came from that, not wanting to use a device I have used before. But I would say that this piece is more formal, than the other work I typically do. There are still some improvisational contexts in it, but we’ll see if I’ll maintain them. I think the framework is very specific, and I completely trust these dancers in a way I wouldn’t trust a lot of other students. Even though we haven’t had a lot of time together, SADC knows my vocabulary, my approach to movement. But more than that, there is a willingness of the group I’m working with, they will try anything. I don’t feel like there is anything I can’t suggest or ask, that they won’t immediately respond to. And that’s really important to have that kind of support from the other people in the room.”
