The goal for the NMAAHC Media Conservation Intern was to aid NMAAHC Media Conservation staff in researching what the function/purpose are of the files the Canon C100 and Canon C300 MKII generate during recording.  Camera-card structure is based not only on what video codec is employed, such as AVCHD or XF-AVC, but can vary due to camera brand or model.  These variations make camera-original recordings an unsuitable form for long-term preservation within an archive.  As software and hardware change, the tools required to access or migrate this content may become unavailable.  Gaining an understanding what each file generated by the camera does will aid in writing a script that will consolidate the contents of the camera-card into a more archival appropriate package.

In addition to the above research, the NMAAHC internship provided the opportunity to expand on topics introduced in CINE-GT.1808 Digital Literacy for Moving Image Archiving and Preservation, including installing GitHub repositories NMAAHC Mediamicroservice, CUNY-TV’s Mediamicreoservices, and taking training tutorials through LinkedIn.com.  Sample media files were evaluated using Mediainfo.
