Syreeta Gates, El Centro, Summer 2019, NEH
It was a joy to intern at El Centro this summer and work under Pedro Hernandez. I had a number of opportunities to apply many of my learnings from my first year MIAP as well as strengthen some of the skills acquired over those two semesters. Namely, I was able to accomplish the following: 1.) I researched and found about 15 grants to specifically support the maintenance of the collections at El Centro. 2.) I developed a process of digitization for VHS tapes from the Raquel Z. Rivera Collection at El Centro. 3.) I created a workflow for the process of digitization as a tool to offer instructions and guidance to other employees at El Centro for further archival work at El Centro. 4.) I conducted research on the preservation of cassette tapes. 5.) I constructed a plan for the preservation of select audio materials from the Raquel Z. Rivera Collection.
