Ethan Gates, Northeast Historic Film, Summer 2014, NEH

Northeast Historic Film is a regional, non-profit archive dedicated to preserving and sharing the communal heritage of New England. They primarily do so through the acquisition of home movies and other amateur moving image productions, but they provide a wide range of services from transfer and repair to exhibition and education. Interning there was a unique opportunity to get involved in the entire operation of an archive, from collections management to distribution and tech services. Whether it was completing an inventory of a broadcast video collection, cataloging reference copies of archival materials, prepping film for digital scanning, writing donation agreements, or just discussing theater booking and techniques for client interaction with the staff, I felt like I got a great sense at NHF for how even a relatively small archival organization can operate with quality and efficiency.
