Carmel Curtis, Major League Baseball, Summer 2014

Working for 10 weeks this summer in Secaucus, NJ at Major League Baseball Production's Archive was a rewarding experience. I had the opportunity to work with collections in a variety of formats. The primary concentration of my internship centered around a number of film collections. Inspecting, cleaning, identifying, labeling, consolidating, and rehousing baseball films from 1955-1981 was one of the major projects I completed this summer. Working with clips, trims&outs, mag tracks, and entire game footage, I was able to handle film elements that I had previously had limited experience with. Taking note of the vast amount of film held at MLBP, I created a film handling guidebook to be used by employees who will need to access assets on film. Creating this guidebook enabled me to put to words many of the film handling techniques and procedures that had learned from my professional and academic experience. In addition to working with film, I also had the opportunity to work with 3/4" Umatics that were experiences signs of SSS. I created a report on the history of the format and explained common causes of deterioration and possible solutions to these instances of damage. Lastly, I worked with a collection of audiocassettes from Mets radio broadcasts. Starting in the 1986 season, I worked to digitize over 150 hours of Mets games!
