Sarah Hartzell at New York Public Library
This fall I interned at the New York Public Library in the Audio and Moving Image Preservation lab. I learned the ins and outs of digitizing audio and video, eventually transferring over 200 items on seven different formats. I got very familiar with the inner workings of VCRs, UMatic and audio cassette tapes, and DV files. In addition, I learned a whole host of skills that I never imagined would be a part of AV archiving, like Python and bash scripting, electrical wiring, and cable making.
