Anne-Marie Desjardins, IndieCollect, Fall 2018

From September to December of 2018, I pursued a scanning and restoration internship at IndieCollect, Lab for Icon & Idiom, Inc. During this time, I was able to get a taste of the entire cycle of work that goes into a film restoration, all the while working in a non-profit environment, whose devotion to Independent Cinema is very much in line with my own ideologies as I enter the field.

First, I was able to develop my film inspection skills, looking at a variety of titles and element sets and writing inspection reports. I then learned to operate the Kinetta Scanner by shadowing the scan of, namely, Jazz on a Summer’s Day (Stern, 1959) and ultimately conducting my own scan of Seeing Red (Reichert and Klein, 1983). Finally, I learned to use DaVinci resolve to conduct dirt removal on Woo Who? May Wilson (Rothschild, 1970), for which I was able to oversee and deliver the DCP. I also applied dirt removal to about ten short films of the Apparatus Collection, which is a production company started by Todd Haynes, Christine Vachon and Barry Ellsworth. It was a wonderful experience to get a taste of the operations from start to finish and work closely with Indie films.
