Anne Schweikert, Fales Library & Special Collections, Fall 2018, NEH

As an intern at New York University’s Fales Library & Special Collections and Digital Library Technology Services, under the supervision of Audiovisual Archivist Kelly Haydon and Digital Archivist Don Mennerich, I worked on a semester-long initiative to write recommendations and workflows for born-digital optical media preservation across NYU Special Collections. Over the semester, I researched and documented best practices for optical media preservation, and wrote a report recommending a course of action for the preservation of optical media at NYU Libraries. In the report, I synthesized my research and proposed workflows for disc imaging, Submission Information Package and Archival Information Package structures, and researcher access to disc images.

I found the internship to be rewarding, as a rare chance to dig deep into a technically complex subset of media. As both digital and (often) audiovisual objects, I found optical media to be right at the overlap of my interests, and I learned an enormous amount about both fields. My goal with the internship was to gain experience in digital forensics and digital audiovisual material, and I learned an enormous amount in this context from both Kelly and Don.
