Ericka Jones-Craven's project, Up for Air, has been awarded funding from We, Women.

About the Project:

Up for Air is a testimony. It invites spiritual and non-spiritual people alike to breathe in the narrative of how queer Black bodies move within religious spaces. In Black churches, queerness is casually present, but rarely addressed. The project creates a space for conversations for and by queer people of color in traditional places of worship. Through sound, color and light, Ericka will create a visceral experience that offers a crisp perspectives on the dynamics within the Black church. “Queer” in this illustration is not limited to gender or sexuality, but rather spans beyond to include individuality, eccentricity, and silent conversations with God. This project will gather experiences from members of this community and be depicted in film and images.

About We, Women:

"We, Women is not just a grant: it’s an opportunity to shape a national conversation about problems, solutions, and how to find common ground.

The first phase of this developing project will feature up to 20 projects in key states and a mobile national exhibition starting in late 2020.

We support women, transgender, and non-binary artists whose processes are rooted in community engagement and collaboration. Their projects will re-frame issues and highlight underrepresented narratives that resist and interrogate social and political landscapes while promoting empathy and unity."
