Incoming & Admitted Student FAQ

Whether you're an incoming freshman or transfer student, you’re bound to have some questions about your academic life at Tisch.  Here are the answers to some of the most common questions our students ask.

DO I NEED TO MEET WITH MY ADVISOR BEFORE I REGISTER?

No. Please read your major department’s emails prior to registering. You will receive pertinent information to help prepare you for registration. Your major courses are prescribed and you will have options to take general education and elective courses.

HOW MANY CREDITS CAN I TAKE?

You are required to register for 16-18 credits, which is full-time status. Students are expected to be at full time status every semester with the exception of their final semester prior to graduation.

CAN I TRANSFER ADVANCED STANDING CREDITS TO TISCH?

Yes, you can transfer up to 32 credits in advanced standing credits for eligible AP, IB, and Maturity foreign exams. A maximum of 8 credits can be applied to General Education. Any remaining credits will be allocated to electives. Advanced standing credits are applied toward the end of your first year after you discuss this matter with your advisor. New Transfer students may refer to this webpage for more transfer credit information.

WHEN CAN I DECLARE A MINOR OR DOUBLE MAJOR?

You can pursue a minor at Tisch and/or a cross-school minor and/or second major in the College of Arts and Science. We highly recommend that you wait until the end of your first year to discuss this matter with an advisor and declare a minor or second major at that time. Any minor or double major request form submitted by a first semester freshman will not be processed.

CAN I CHANGE MY MAJOR TO ANOTHER TISCH MAJOR OR TRANSFER TO ANOTHER NYU SCHOOL?

You must be enrolled in the department to which you were originally admitted for one full year at full-time study before you may apply to change your major to another department within Tisch. Similarly, the earliest you can apply for internal transfer admission to another NYU school is the second semester/term of consecutive full-time study. Please refer to this web page for more information.
