Producing in London

London is home to a thriving film and theatre scene, an ideal location to discover the ins and outs of the entertainment industry.

Learn the role of the producer in the entertainment industry, focusing on the real-world process of developing a pitch project in film, theatre, episodic, and immersive/live events. Students will understand the industry landmarks and strategies employed by studio moguls, key individuals, and underrepresented BIPOC and women producers. An integral part of the program is experiential learning and excursions along with London guest speakers with different career trajectories. This program is a practical complement to any area of study in fine arts, arts & sciences, interactive media, music and business. If you are an NYU student, you will also satisfy the two core course requirements for the Tisch Minor in Producing.

Program Overview

This four-week program will provide you with a foundational understanding of the dynamics of producing. Classes are held at NYU London, Bedford Square.

We explore different arts in London (film, theatre, immersive, exhibition) and immediately apply that experience to the courses through in-class discussion and diverse guest speakers. Curriculum

Students will enroll in the following two courses for a total of 8 units. 

NYU students: Both these courses count towards the Minor in Producing.

Please Note: Students studying abroad on a Tisch track are not eligible to pursue an internship (except for Theatre in Ghana and Television Writing in London). Tisch programs do not provide work visas.

Producing Essentials

ISPEC-UT 1006 | 4 units | Instructor: Sharon Badal

Today’s major creative fields—film, television, music, theatre, dance, and new media—need quality producers. A producer with a firm knowledge of the craft, a discerning eye for material, fundraising ability, a grasp of the law, cash flow, people, and ethics is rare. This course provides students with a framework for understanding the dynamics of producing—as an art form and a business profession—and for completing a creative product in the entertainment and media industries. Students are introduced to the basic concepts, terms, and principles that apply to the role of producer in the entertainment and media industries along with the specific job functions that are required to effectively and efficiently complete a production.

Media Moguls

ISPEC-UT 562 | 4 units

This course attempts to track the American entertainment industry from its plebian origins through its rise to becoming the predominant mass entertainment culture in the world. Students discover the origins of the production practices that are employed in the entertainment industry today by following the legendary characters, movie moguls, and media titans of the early 20th century and the companies they built. The emphasis is on the way the visionaries of the time impacted seemingly risk-averse systems to invigorate and sometimes completely revolutionize them. These innovative men and women include, but are not limited, to Louis B. Mayer, George Lucas, Maya Deren, Shirley Clark, Nam Jun Paik, Lucille Ball, Russell Simmons, Clive Davis, Julie Taymor, and Steve Jobs.

Note: Students should wait to receive their admissions notification and confirmation that the program is running prior to purchasing airline tickets. Students accepted to the program should purchase refundable airline tickets and/or travel insurance in the event the program is canceled or program dates are changed due to world events. It is strongly recommended that students purchase insurance for trip cancellation, flight cancellation, luggage loss or damage, as well as medical and accident coverage.
