Wednesday Night Live!: A Roundtable Conversation on Humor & Politics

Featuring comments by Marlene Ramírez-Cancio of “Fulana”, Denae Famada of “DNA Comedy”, and Ricardo Gamboa.

Together we ask: Is humor a valid platform to seek truth, maintain hope and combat oppression?

This roundtable, moderated by our very own Yasmeen Chism, MA ’16 Candidate, will advance a seriously funny discussion on humor.

As contemporary Black, Hispanic and Queer performers, our special guests will each address and explore the manifestations and responses to the thematic of humor in our current moment:

Fulana” - derived from the Arabic word for “anyone”—is a popular term in Spanish and Portuguese that refers to an “imaginary or undetermined person,” much like “Jane Doe” or “so-and-so” – encourages young people to engage in critical thinking through parody.

DNA Comedy creates satirical comedy skits and dances on race, class and gender.

And Ricardo Gamboa is an artist, activist and academic currently performing with the Southside Ignoramus Quartet, and collaborator of the controversial but critically acclaimed radical youth ensemble: The Young Fugitives.

Please join us in conversation as NY-based artist-activists and scholars present their work and discuss the creative and political stakes of taking humor seriously!
