Masi Asare

Masi is a composer/librettist, singer, voice coach, and M.A. and Ph.D. graduate of Performance Studies. Her dissertation-in-progress works at the nexus of vocal sound and theories of embodiment, race, and technique within US musical theatre. As a voice coach, her voice students have performed on Broadway, at major regional theatres and in pop music venues. As a composer and author of musicals, she has received a number of honors including a Dramatists Guild Fellowship, the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award with mentorship from composer Jeanine Tesori (FUN HOME). She is also the recipient of a commission from the Theatre Royal Stratford East in London for her new semiautobiographical musical THE FAMILY RESEMBLANCE, incorporating a range of musical styles including American folk and pop, west African highlife and palm wine song, and classical Akan music. Masi has presented papers at conferences including “From a Whisper to a Scream: The Voice in Music” (EMP Pop, 2016) and the “Voice at the Limits of Hearing” (NYU Music Department, 2014). She has also served previously on the editorial staff of TDR and as a grant writer for various schools at Columbia University.
