Garet Weissenborn

Garet is a queer scholar, writer, and creative from Albuquerque, New Mexico who is a member of the BA Class of 2022. In between his endeavors in filmmaking, writing, dancing, and creating, he studies Global Public Health alongside Performance Studies with specific focuses on LGBTQ+ studies, media, and entertainment. He is particularly interested in the intersection between performance and health. He hopes to merge his talents in poetry, media, health, and entertainment in order to provide more restorative sexual and mental health resources to queer and trans youth in schools and beyond.

Why PS @ NYU?

Where do I even begin? I wanted a field of study that didn't constrict my learning or force my learning into a traditional academic framework. I still wanted to explore and delve into critical theory, but I also wanted to understand how I can apply this theory to my art, everyday life, culture, and performance. I am very much a creative as I am a scholar. Performance Studies is exactly just that. This program teaches you how to analyze and inquire into performance theory that formulates and manifests in every aspect and facet of our being and culture. There's nothing like Performance Studies, and there's nothing like the professors and advisors and performance studies community here at Tisch. I am a queer scholar, a creative, an actor, a writer, a dancer, and here at Performance Studies I can be it all, my full self without masking or dismissing parts of my experience and knowledge when learning within an academic curriculum. Performance Studies at its core requires you to make connections and blend across fields, professions, and curricula. I chose Performance Studies because of the renowned scholars, mentors, advisors, and friends that I would (and am now) learn and grow with to understand my art and my place in this world. I chose Performance Studies because I don't have to pick one avenue of interest to be confined to, especially within a particular field of study, when I learn and seek to understand. Performance Studies allows you to be one, both, and many things at once. Performance Studies allows you to understand, learn, and craft your art and knowledge in a way that is flexible, honest, and liberating.
