New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Department of Drama, solicits applications for an Assistant Arts Professor in Physical Acting and Movement in The New Studio on Broadway, Tisch School of the Arts, Undergraduate Drama, granting a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre.
We seek candidates with seven to ten years of excellence in the teaching of Physical Acting and Movement teaching fundamentals of Clown, Commedia, Le Coq, Mask, Alexander, contact improv, and period style and form. Candidates should also have demonstrated proficiencies in Ensemble Theatre training, directing of Musical and non-Musical Theatre, devised work, musical staging and choreography. The New Studio on Broadway offers professional theatre training in Acting, Voice and Text, Music, Vocal Performance, Dance and Physical Acting. An understanding of intersections between heightened physical expression and formal dance, as well as the distinct differences between the two, is paramount in the successful delivery of the New Studio on Broadway curriculum.
Candidates must have a varied depth of understanding that a freedom of the mind and a relentless courage in the body is essential for the professional actor to not only learn the skills of managing song/script/choreography, but to be able to use those tools to their fullest ability. Examples of those techniques include fundamental Stanislavsky (Method), the electric movement work of Pina Bausch, the compositional work of Tina Landau and Ann Bogart, the embodiment of space exemplified by Eartha Kitt, and the risk and vulnerability championed by Marina Abramovic.
Candidates will lead an immersive Physical Acting Intensive, teaching tools of ensemble-based theatre, enriching their training beyond conventional traditional acting and Musical Theatre tropes.
Candidates will direct one fully-produced, full-length production project per academic year. They may also choreograph this production project. Therefore, we seek those with a professional and academic background in direction, and/or choreography, heightened physical staging of Shakespeare, and heightened language plays, contemporary plays, new work development, and Musical Theatre, from the Golden Age of the American musical to new musical work from our colleagues and collaborators in Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.
Candidates will collaborate with the NSB Full Time faculty on the evolving curriculum and training models of NSB Professional Theatre Training and will evolve, with Studio Leadership and full-time faculty, the sequential Physical Acting training, and its integration into Primary and Advanced Training over the four-year Professional Theatre Training. Candidates will collaborate with Studio leadership and NSB faculty delivering Physical Acting teaching at a level of professional excellence, articulating the skills, goals and achieved curricular outcomes for all New Studio on Broadway students. We welcome interest and experience in International Teaching and NYU’S Global Network.
All candidates must have a robust and active professional practice that may include, but needn’t be limited to, acting, directing, devising and/or choreographing at nationally and or internationally recognized theaters, cultural centers, and institutions. Immediate, current professional practice and a wealth of industry understanding is expected of all NSB professors. All candidates must have a background in teaching diverse theatrical practices, a healthy artistic curiosity and an interest in innovation. We strive to train actors and artists attuned to the present and equipped for the future.
Candidates must have the highest possible standards of excellence in Professional Theatre Training as Tisch Drama and The New Studio on Broadway are teaching towards top tier professional artistry and innovative excellence. Candidates should be adept at incorporating rigor, wellness, innovations in holistic actor focus, personal agency, anti-racism, and social justice in their practice. These are ascending values within NSB training. Candidates may be asked to bring these rigorous standards to the Artistic Review (auditions for incoming students) process. Candidates will be expected to serve on committees at the behest of the Chair of Drama and the Dean of Tisch school of the Arts.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $75,000 - $115,000. This pay range represents base pay only (for 9 months) and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
