Klavier Wang, Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, Summer 2020

Under the COVID-19 pandemic, we all face challenges to different degrees. As a Taiwan resident, I was lucky enough to go back to Taiwan, one of the places in the world with a very small number of COVID-19 infection cases, to conduct my summer internship on-site. I had my summer internship at the Department of Film Digital Restoration in the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, the largest and most prominent film archive in Taiwan.

My internship tasks included inspecting, repairing and cleaning physical films (35mm camera negative originals and positive prints), scanning films into digital files with 2K or 4K resolution, digital restoration of film images, scanning and restoring film sounds, and creating output files out of restored films for theater screening. All these jobs are essential components of film digital restoration, which, in the recent decade becomes a popular way to make film heritages shine again. Upon acquiring extensive experience in every step in film digital restoration from this fruitful internship, I believe my academic and professional profile has been significantly enriched.
