Becca Bender, UC-Berkeley, Bancroft Library & California Audiovisual Preservation Project (CAVPP), Summer 2017, NEH

I split my time between the Bancroft Library and the California Audiovisual Preservation Project (CAVPP). Bancroft is the special collections library of the University of California at Berkeley, and they have extensive audiovisual collections comprised of various formats of film, video, and audio. My projects at Bancroft included creating new metadata standards for audiovisual cataloguing, creating inventory and format guides for processing by non-AV archivists/librarians, creating digitization specifications, improving intellectual control over environmental holdings for grant opportunities, and documenting the workflow between Bancroft and CAVPP. I also taught a workshop to Bancroft staff to introduce the new AV protocols that I had established.

CAVPP is a project that performs mass digitization of audiovisual materials across the state of California. I was involved with the processing of incoming collections from institutional partners, performing QC of digitized audio files, uploading files and metadata to the Internet Archive for public access, reviewing CAVPP's workflow from the perspective of a partner (Bancroft), and building CAVPP's collection guide.
