Erica Lopez, Third World Newsreel, Spring 2017

I performed two main projects throughout the internship at Third World Newsreel (TWN): updating a Filemaker Pro database and assisting on two grant proposals. On Mondays I worked on Filemaker Pro and Fridays were spent on the proposals. I was to update any production information or element information on each record. I used their inventory sheets and online catalogue to get information about the films' production. Their catalogue had important metadata such as summary, producer/director, year, running time, color/bw, language, location, collection, or subject. But, this was only to be used for titles that Newsreel or TWN produced. Additionally, I also would do a Google search to find a film's summary, year of release, or any other information that could be entered into the title's record.

I assisted Interim Executive Director JT Takagi in putting together rough drafts for the grant proposals. TWN applied for an NEA grant and an NEH grant. I looked at each agency's website to familiarize myself with the grant's requirements. Next, I created a folder for each grant, so that JT would be able to access what I was working on. In each folder I compiled documents that outlined the grant's requirements, the application process, previously funded projects, an outline on the specific format that each grant required, and the type of language that the grants were using. For the NEA, JT wrote the draft, I just assisted on putting the folder together of documents that would help her access the information needed as quickly as possible. For the NEH, I produced a basic outline  and minimal draft.
