During spring 2026, I worked at NYU Libraries’ Barbara Goldsmith Conservation and Preservation Department. Firstly, I inspected and documented film materials from NYU Libraries’ collections, which included the material connected with MSS.133, FILMS.001, and NYU Archives' audiovisual materials. In total, I processed 49 film records, which included 20 inspection records and 29 scanning records. The materials covered 16mm film, 35mm black-and-white print film, and Regular 8 film. During inspection, I documented each film’s gauge, base type, color, sound, shrinkage, decomposition level, edge damage, scratches, splice condition, and container information in the department’s Airtable Film Inspection Database. Secondly, I participated in the process of rehousing and preparing film materials for storage by improving the packing materials and reinforcing the boxes. Thirdly, I scanned the films from NYU Archives using the Lasergraphics ScanStation to produce access copies of them. Moreover, an equipment malfunction affected the storage conditions and demonstrated the significance of making decisions quickly and communicating effectively. Through these projects, I noticed that film inspection, preparation, rehousing, scanning, and documentation complement each other in the institutional preservation workflow.
