Cameron Smith, Moving Image Research Collections at the University of South Carolina

Over the summer, I worked at length with the extensive motion picture film holdings at the Moving Image Research Collections (MIRC) at the University of South Carolina. The archive at MIRC is home to one of the United States' largest collections of motion picture film with a comprehensive collection of Fox Movietone News nitrate film at its core. Through the MIAP internship, I was able to inspect and process both 16 mm "safety" film as well as a massive variety of 35 mm nitrate film from camera negatives to positive prints and beyond. In addition to working largely independently when inspecting and processing film, I was able to work closely with site staff to train on MIRC's high-tech film scanner, allowing me to be party to the process from inspection table to digital file.
