Three Tisch students—Annie Schweikert (MIAP), Emperatriz Ung (Game Center), and Sigga Regina Sigurthorsdottir (MIAP)—will present their project on archiving the student work of Tisch’s Game Design MFA Program.

Video games exist at the intersection of art, technology, and media, and present an excellent opportunity for collaboration between game designers and media archivists. This project links the two fast-developing fields by applying audiovisual media preservation methods to the preservation of video games. Using the current MA Thesis and Studio 2 classes as a first accession group, the project aims to create a framework to preserve student designers’ work for future access and use.

The Game Design Department has in recent years made a number of different efforts to preserve student work, but no approach has stuck. The SaveFile project aims to fill this gap and not only generate a standard for the Game Center, but also serve as an example for other Tisch departments to follow. Dedicated and organized archiving and preservation of student work is an essential step for Tisch to take - not only as a way of knowing its past, but of presenting it and learning from the work being done by students.

In this presentation, the three project organizers will discuss the project’s current status, issues, and questions raised in the process, and will invite a discussion on the potentials of the project.

This project was made possible with the generous support of a Tisch School of the Arts Interdepartmental Grant, sponsored by Tisch's Office of the Dean and Graduate Student Organization.
