Department of Art & Public Policy Minor
What is Art & Public Policy?
The Department of Art & Public Policy at NYU Tisch is an interdisciplinary department focusing on the relationship between art and politics. We offer an intensive one-year MA in Arts Politics and an undergraduate minor taught by internationally recognized leaders in their fields. Our program is a meeting place for arts activists whose work cannot be contained by a single discipline or motivation. We rigorously explore the interplay between critical theory and creative practice.
Why should I minor in Arts Politics?
"As spectators, artists, and thinkers, we exist in the midst of and are surrounded by a world of knowledge and experiences which includes the influential arts. Artists, spectators, and thinkers engage these cultural artifacts in their work. How do these works of art connect with the public and with broader political, cultural, and global landscapes? An APP Minor will engage these questions and more." Prof. Sheril Antonio
"How do we find meaning and purpose within our art practice, research and scholarship? How can the arts transform politics and society? You will learn strategies for arts activism to build cultural movements. You will see the potential of the arts as a space for hope for reimagination to inspire social justice. With the minor you will open your perspective to grasp the possibilities of the arts to awaken your own practice and research." Prof. Karen Finley
The minor allows students to customize a suite of four courses (beyond the two taken by all Tisch first-years through the core curriculum) that offer a window into the world through art, deepening an understanding of the role of art in social and political struggles. Students may include one thematically linked course from outside Art & Public Policy with permission of the Department Chair. Please email tisch.arpo@nyu.edu for more details.
Tisch students must declare the minor via their Albert Student Center. Students at other NYU schools complete the online cross-school minor form. Your home school and the minor department will be notified about your request to declare the minor. Once approved, your home school will post the minor on your record.
