Petra Dominkova gained her Ph.D. in 2008 from FAMU, Prague, the Czech Republic, defending the dissertation Film Noir and Nature. She teaches classes on the history of Czech and Central European Cinema at CIEE, NYU/FAMU, and CET, as well as multiple classes at FAMU, focused on cinematography, genres, film style, film noir, narration, and film and the city. She studied at UCLA as a Fulbright grantee in 2004-2005 and taught at CREEES, UT Austin in Fall 2019. In addition, she works as a translator and interpreter; for instance, she translated David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson’s Film Art: An Introduction to the Czech language (2011).

Recently, she contributed to SWPACA 2021 (USA) with her paper “Blues by the Beach (2004) vs. Mike’s Place (2015): Documentary into the Graphic Novel“ and won an Heldrich-Dvorak Travel Award. In addition, her essay "Phenomenology of a Projection Booth," presented at Avanca 2021 (Portugal) was awarded Honorable Mention by the Jury of the Prize Engr. Fernando Gonçalves Lavrador.

Her main research interests include Czech and East European cinematography, film noir, and graphic novels.
