As part of Community Week 2019, choreographer, performer, writer, educator (and MacArthur "Genius") Liz Lerman and TCR's own Erika Moore led an inspiring workshop for the Tisch community focused on the history, values, and framework of the Critical Response Process.

In the first session, participants were able to learn how their family and cultural backgrounds impact their approach and delivery of feedback by answering a simple question: “Who raised you and who raised them?” A formal CRP process took place in the following session, where participants were able to learn how to filter opinions, judgments, and expectations when providing statements of meaning, responding to artists’ questions, posing questions, and giving suggestions for the artist (with their consent of course!). In the last open session, participants learned about the different ways CRP could be facilitated and even tried facilitating the four-step process themselves.

Throughout the workshop, there were a lot of “ah-ha’s,” “mhmm’s,” and tears (the good ones!) as people engaged in open, deep, and critical dialogue. Every person left inspired to revamp, alter and/or continue their work in their desired direction.

If you were unable to make the workshop and are interested in learning more about how to utilize CRP in your department or classroom, please reach out to our Program Administrator, Erika Moore, at erika.moore@nyu.edu.
