Photography & Imaging first-year student Denise Stephanie Hewitt is starting off the new school year with her photos featured by a major brand.

"Due to COVID, I experimented a lot with self portraiture, using self timers and countdowns to help frame myself. I was given the creative license and freedom to take this project however I saw it creatively, along with some desired deliverables (cropping, wearing fall attire, shoes fully in frame etc).

From deliberately wearing braids down to the clothes I wore, each part was deliberate. I also learned to give up the serious face I usually wear, and have fun smiling in these projects."

In an Instagram post, Denise recently expressed her excitement at the opportunity:

"My 7th-grade-self is geeking out.

Taking the bus every morning at 5am, the conductor frequently brought up the fact that I always wore my white Chuck Taylors. Now, I’m being given support and a platform to make change, by the brand I pridefully wear on my feet.

Thank you to the Converse team for reaching out and trusting me with this project and more in the future."

Despite the excitement, Denise is no stranger to having her work published for a wide audience-- the Converse spread is the latest in a long line of well-earned features with iconic fashion lines and major publications including Vogue, Barney's & V Magazine, Refinery29, and even a Marie Clair magazine cover! Denise is now part of COnverse's new "All Star" team.

Please join the Photo community in congratulating Denise on her achievement, and extending a warm welcome to the class of 2020.

I hope that in this age of technology and easier access to information via the Internet, that people continue to educate themselves with the mindset of understanding rather than refuting. This way, maybe we could make America live up to its creeds in our lifetime.
