Title of Project

On the Line

Description of Project

I discuss the making of nation and gender at the border of the body in dance and drill, drawing on its history in the physical education movement, using Mary Douglas's theory of Purity and Danger and Judith Butler's theory of performativity.

Project Inspiration

My project comes out of my experience dancing on dance and drill teams since high school, and especially out of my experience coaching both high school and college dancers, and my need to engage critically and hopefully with the performance style I work in. I am most grateful to my coaches, teammates, and dancers for their generosity, trust, and support all these years <3
