Ph.D. Candidate Yasmeen Chism

Congratulations to Ph.D. candidate Yasmeen Chism who is a recipient of NYU’s Urban Doctoral Fellowship program for 2020-2021. The Urban Doctoral Fellowship provides funds for the fellows to attend conferences and many other opportunities to further their research. The fellows are also able to participate in a unique seminar series focused on research on urban issues, attend networking lunches/dinners, and will have the opportunity to present their work for feedback in front of their peers and NYU faculty.

Chism is excited to be a fellow and join a collective of students who are also working in the field of urban research and can provide her with important feedback.

She shared how this fellowship will directly apply to her work, "My dissertation, Tracing Black Movements: Chor[e]ographing Black Dis/placements in North Carolina’s Piedmont, is about an area I call home and provides a robust theoretical setting for my dissertation. I use this region to highlight how the politics of North Carolina were, and continue to be, shaped by the presence, movement, and dis/placements of black people. Further, my research unsettles notions of urbanity, contends that definitions of urban space are fluid, and suggests that the ascription of meaning to place can be made by tracing the contours of a region as opposed to a singular city. To that end, I hope to demonstrate that by mapping North Carolina’s Piedmont I can capture the scope of black dis/placements as a set of national and international phenomena."

Chism is excited to combine this opportunity with what she has already learned at PS, and the department is very excited to see what she will do next!
