Akeem Muhammad (B.A. Candidate)
On October 13, 2018, B.A. Candidate Akeem Muhammad will present research from his capstone project at "The Convening on the Commons" during the "Queens International 2018: Volumes" event at the Queens Museum.
Programming on Saturday, October 13th will include talks, panels, and performances that explore the agora as a reference to the Museum’s architecture and a response to works on view which address the commons, collective memory, and public space as it relates to the body. The Convening on the Commons is an afternoon of conversation in response to the museum’s skylight and atrium galleries, two architectural spaces that house works engaging notions of the agora, understood as a public space used variably as a site for assembly and as a marketplace. Within this context, Convening on the Commons welcomes interdisciplinary thinkers and artists for discussion groups, performances, and a panel discussion focusing on the relationships and contradictions between the commons, publicness, and knowledge production. SESSIONS discussion groups will include participants giving 5-minute talks, performances, and/or readings that examine the commons in relation to technology, surveillance, and data; architecture and land; and the reclaiming of space and community engagement.
