O Samba — An Evening of dance, queerness, blackness and afterlifes with Luiz de Abreu and Calixto Neto
In “O Samba do Crioulo Doido”, Calixto Neto deconstructs representations of the black body in Brazilian culture and associations to eroticism and exoticism. A response to the urgent need to address the question of decolonialisation, the legacy of slavery and the relationships of domination it induces, the solo O Samba do Crioulo Doido, devised and danced by Luiz de Abreu before being passed on to Calixto Neto, deconstructs the representations of the black body in Brazilian culture by bringing about a shift from a body-object to a body-subject.
This event is a collaboration between Ville Albertine, the Department of Performance Studies, Tisch School of the Arts, the Department of Dance, Tisch School of the Arts, and the Center for Disability Studies at New York University. The performance will be followed by a film screening and a discussion with Calixto Neto, Aimee Cox, and André Lepecki, as part of DANCE ASSEMBLY: A Conversation Series
