PS Assembly: On Re-Gifting with Professor Barbara Browning

PS Assembly

*** These sessions are only open to current students and alumni. Please check your emails for zoom registration information!

On November 4th, join Professor Browning for a PS Assembly on Re-Gifting. Lewis Hyde has famously made a connection between the notion of a "gift economy" and that of artistic "giftedness". For Hyde, that is, our capacity to make art is a result of our having received the gifts of others. We'll talk a little about that proposition, and then exchange some gifts of our own, and attempt to reciprocate. Please bring one of the following to give to somebody else:
• a dirty haiku

• a 1-minute video of an interpretive dance (“dance” can be broadly construed)

• a 1-minute a cappella cover of a song you love (mp3)

• a voicemail apologizing for something (mp3)
Don't worry if your gifts are very modest! That's the idea!

This fall we will be offering a series of get-togethers for all students and faculty in the department.  Each session will be loosely grounded in a topic that ties to the faculty's pedagogy. The series will be run by alternating members of the faculty who will briefly introduce each session and then facilitate discussion for the group. The assemblies will offer opportunities to come together--across the ranks and in a more informal setting--to discuss how we can approach a project, or an object, or a problem; how we research it; how we put our ideas together; how we communicate those ideas.
