Sunmi Yong
M.A. '19
Sunmi has been raised and mostly lived in Seoul, S.Korea, the very homogeneous nation in Far-east Asia, but has always tried hard to situate herself in a world, where the diversity of nation, race, gender, and more gets appreciated rather than rejected or demarcated. This desire has always fuelled her to go abroad whenever she sees a good opportunity. This time, it was New York!
In regards to career, she has mostly worked at museums as an assistant/researcher/coordinator in Seoul and participated in exhibitions, especially those of collections in conjunction with Foundation Cartier, France and British Council, England. She has independently curated performances together with choreographer, dancer, writer, and sound engineer, with full fundings from the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.
Why PS @ NYU?
While participating in and creating performances, I became interested in performance studies within the contemporary visual art scenes. The more I get into it, the more eager I have become. Since NYU Tisch has the most prestigious program in regard to performance studies and the city itself acts as a living archive, I had no second thoughts. Not only do I get to learn from great faculty, but also engage with other artists from all over the world.
