Jhabri Hughes

M.A. Candidate

Jhabir Hughes

My name is Jhabri (Juh-bri), but I prefer to be addressed by my middle name, Eshé, for artistic purposes. I am from the Southside of Chicago and I am proud to represent the "hood" as it expands the aesthetic of intelligence. I have recently began a color business titled 24HRSUNLIGHTstudios that focuses on sonochromatics (converting sound into color, focusing on music entries) and fabrication of material. Currently, I am exposing myself to more design techniques to have my sonochromatic art translated into physical garments. I have discovered my affinity for fashion this year in hopes of working for YEEZY x adidas. Kanye West has been my largest influence in my life as he is the reason I began to rap and later produce hip hop tracks.

I performed with my band, The Chromotherapists (later named The Visible Spectrum), around Chicago, IL for two years (2016-2018). We have played for Sofar Sounds over ten times, for former Tennessee Titan Richard Gardner, and for DIY venues such as The Dojo and Elephant's Ear, and at art galleries like AMFM and Blanc.

I enjoy reading books about color theory, color medicine, the physics of color, fabrics, phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and philosophy. Rugby is my main sport and basketball is a close second. I normally spend time at home regenerating and concentrating my energies because the outside world induces my anxiety.

I'm mostly quiet, but feel free to correspond with me about color, fabrication, and music because that's what gets my gears turning!

Why PS @ NYU?

I want to branch out into marketing and visual fields, so I want to challenge myself to see how I can incorporate color theory into fashion, performance, videos, and philosophy.
