Julia Margaret Lu

Class of 2023

Headshot of Julia Margaret Lu

Julia Margaret Lu is an immersive experience designer (mostly) working in the physical realm. Her interests are informed by a background in architecture, community service, and education. Born and raised in New York City, she is constantly looking for ways to subvert the urban experience and reconnect back to the Earth.

At ITP, she is developing a thesis project on mapping legacy through a large participatory kinetic installation. Past works include a performance titled this beautiful microclimate created in collaboration with Sarah Elix that asks a room full of strangers a bunch of questions about their place in the world. This semester she is taking a course called Designing the Absurd with Pedro Oliveira where she worked on a slow e-ink messaging device, a Pavlovian chip clip, and a magnifying mirror that obscures your reflection when you've looked for enough time.

Julia is also currently the Managing Editor of Adjacent, the ITP/IMA journal. Adjacent will be distributing copies of its first printed publication at the ITP/IMA Winter Show on Dec. 18/19.
