HOW TO APPLY TO FILM & TV

The 2025-2026 application is now closed for first-year applicants. 
The 2025-2026 application is now closed for Transfer applicants. The Film department does not accept Spring term transfers.
The 2026-2027 application will open August 1st for first-year applicants. The 2026-2027 application will open in mid January for Transfer applicants. 
 

Start your Common Application with the NYU supplement (choose Film & TV as your major).

  1. *note Transfer applicants must use the Common Application for Transfer students.

  2. Start your Creative Portfolio via SlideRoom. (tischfilmandtv.slideroom.com)

  3. COMPLETE & SUBMIT BOTH by your chosen deadline. The Common App and the Creative Portfolio are always due at the same time, based on the deadline you choose.

STANDARDIZED TEST SCORES ARE NOT REQUIRED TO APPLY TO THE FILM & TV DEPARTMENT.  

Application Deadlines

FIRST-YEAR APPLICANTS

Early Decision 1
Deadline: November 1 @ 11:59pm EDT
Decision Notification: Mid-December

Early Decision 2
Deadline: January 1 @ 11:59pm EDT
Decision Notification: Mid-February

Regular Decision
Deadline: January 5 @ 11:59pm EDT
Decision Notification: April

*Note: We strongly suggest that applicants submit their portfolios at least 1 week prior to the deadline so as to better ensure their portfolio is complete. NYU recommends that applicants submit their Common Application two weeks prior to the deadline to allow for processing time. 

Transfer APPLICANTS

NYU Internal Transfer (including Tisch Change of Major & Double Major)
Deadline: March 1 @ 11:59pm EDT
Decision Notification: April

External Transfer
Deadline: March 15 @ 11:59pm EDT
Decision Notification: May - June, rolling
*Please note that it is strongly recommended that all transfer applicants apply by March 1st. 

SlideRoom opens January 15 for Transfer Applicants.

NYU strongly recommends that applicants submit their Common Application two weeks prior to the deadline to allow for processing time. 

Requirements for Applying to Film & TV

  1. Submit the Common App.
  2. Submit your Creative Portfolio through SlideRoom.
  3. International students MAY need to provide proof of English language proficiency. Read NYU’s policy to know whether this applies to you.
  4. Proof of High School Diploma or Equivalent (details at NYU Proof of Graduation Policy).
  5. We DO NOT require the SAT/ACT or any other standardized test. We are a “test optional” program.

Already have a bachelor's degree? If you already have a completed bachelor's degree (even if the subject you studied is unrelated to Film), you must apply to the Graduate Film Program. To learn more about applying to the master's degree program, click here. NYU does not grant second bachelor's degrees.*

*The only exceptions are for Nursing and Engineering majors.
