BIG ZOO AND All Department Festival COSTUME DISPLAY IN TISCH LOBBY

An exhibit of costumes from TISCH DRAMA STAGE fall productions recently opened in the 721 Broadway lobby and will be there until February 21. The exhibit includes designs from the Department of Drama’s All Department Festival and the TD STAGE season opener Big Zoo.

Big Zoo, by  Taiwanese playwright Wei Yu-Chia is set in a Chinese zoo that has fallen on hard times and is about to close. The play explores the relationship between animals and humans during a time of change and challenge.

In addition to the lobby exhibit, Big Zoo costumes are showcased in the Production & Design Studio’s display case located at the department's third-floor hub. The display shows headgear worn by actors portraying human and animal characters and includes an array of textures and materials. The new display case highlights designs by P&D  student costume designer MJ Stone and features actual costumes as well as photos of them in production.

When asked about his thoughts on the new display, MJ says, “As you can see if you take a look at the window, there are lots of names credited in the creation of these items. It took a big team to make Big Zoo happen. I read the script and sketched out ideas, but the incredible Undergrad Costume Shop made my ideas a reality through a lot of hard work. I am so proud of the costumes we created together. I'd like to think everyone had fun while doing it!”

Alexia Ross, a third-year film student at Tisch, recently visited the display. “I adore the playful animalistic approach to human characters,” she said. “The designs are stunning and bold. They lend  a hand to the performers by helping their inner animal come out.”
