NYU, Tisch School of the Arts, Department of Drama seeks a dynamic and collaborative colleague to appoint as an Assistant Arts Professor for the MSNR (Meisner) Studio beginning academic year 2023. This is a non-tenure track, full-time faculty position.

The MSNR Studio at Tisch Drama is one of ten undergraduate training programs that comprise the Department of Drama in the Tisch School of the Arts. The Studio trains BFA candidates at the first, second and third year level. The Studio centers its training approach around a nimble, practical application of Meisner Acting Technique designed for inclusive, 21st Century work in the field and the industry. The primary teaching focus for this position will center on first & second year acting technique in the Meisner progression as well as acting, contemporary scene study or an approach to heightened language to third year students.
In addition to the Acting Training, first and second year students travel through classes in Voice and Speech, Williamson and Suzuki Movement Training, Clown, Combat, Accents & Dialects, and additional craft classes. Third year students attend for a single semester or full year of training. Historically, the Fall program focuses on performance in heightened language and the Spring semester centers around contemporary material and new works. The Studio produces 11 productions a year between its second and third year programs. The Studio is currently in residence in Brooklyn at the Tisch 370 Jay Street Campus.
Other responsibilities will include assignments such as directing at least one student production per year in the second and third year programs, mentoring students through the studio training program, committee service at the Studio/Departmental/School level, service to the Artistic Review process to assess candidates for the program, curricular and program development in coordination with Studio Program Director, Nathan Flower, and the Studio’s core faculty.
The successful candidate for this position will have experience & training in one or more additional areas: on-camera work, directing, global heightened language & Shakespeare, actor-director relationship, additional & complementary Acting methodologies, professional development for actors & preparation for entering the field, etc. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience teaching first & second year Meisner progression and who also possess a vision for adapting this technique to meet the needs of the 21st century. The ideal candidate will also bring a demonstrated commitment to furthering efforts toward anti-racism, anti-sexism, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to teach in a diverse training space as well as to be able to work creatively and collaboratively with faculty in multiple disciplines across the school as well as with students, staff, and school leadership.
Candidates should have a fluency with national and global theatre trends in terms of the artistic marketplace and industry as well as a field of artistic research and social transformation. Preferred candidates will have experience synthesizing their focus on Acting to a diverse training vocabulary that incorporates comprehensive Voice, Speech and Text work as well as Movement Training. A depth of background or mastery in the work of other practitioners is welcome, as is a background in Art and Social Justice. The ideal candidate will also be a consummate professional artist with a global perspective and a robust, fully engaged, acclaimed and recognized professional practice, as an Actor, Director or Theatre Practitioner.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the MSNR Studio core faculty on collaborative curricular models and teaching practices for maximum fluidity and intersection, aligning curricular goals, models and strategies to achieve synthesized, organic and unified professional theatre training for the emerging student artist moving seamlessly from their training in order to achieve the free, responsive and autonomous professional actor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master of Fine Arts and or an extensive professional acting, directing and/or professional production/performance experience in national or internationally recognized professional theatres, theatre companies and productions and a minimum of ten years of teaching experience or the equivalent thereof.
