The Real Cost of Clothing: From Seed to Tee

On Monday, March 25, join members of Tisch Drama's Costume Shop in the Tisch School of the Arts lobby for an interactive installation of a T-shirt making factory! Learn hands-on the steps, discipline, and human effort it takes to make a common, cotton T-shirt. If you would like to join the assembly line for an hour on the 25, sign up for a shift.

Additional Note:
• Please arrive 10 minutes before your shift is scheduled to begin and check in with the “Floor Manager.” We will train you on the sewing machine at the top of your shift.
• We are looking for volunteers from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Factory uniforms will be provided.
• Shirts made on the assembly line will be available to participants who fill out a short survey about the experience. Availability is dependent upon productivity.

In remembrance of the 1911 Triangle Factory Fire and focusing on the ecological, humanitarian, and ethical implications of the garment industry, The Real Cost of Clothing will allow for the participant(s) to gain insight to the proficiency and facility every person must possess in the process of turning cloth into a piece of clothing.

Installation conceived by Therese Bruck, Asa Thorton, and Kim Parkman
Supported by a 2019 Tisch Institute of Performing Arts Staff Grant
